Appeal from Stop Censorship! movement about creation of Public service broadcasting

Republication Print version

Appeal from Stop Censorship! movement

Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine

Acting President

Oleksandr Turchynov

Prime Minister of Ukraine

Arseniy Yatsenyuk

Over the last twenty years, and especially during public confrontations and protests, public media were the most biased tool of public opinion’s manipulation. Events of the last three months and the victory of civil society opened a historic chance to finally create the media, accountable to the community, and controlled not by the government and politicians.

But today, many journalists and media workers are concerned about the delay in the actions of new government with the creation of Public service broadcasting. We believe that the new team does not intend to do as old system did and to use state media for the own special political purposes.

According to foregoing, we demand a meeting about the creation of Public service broadcasting in Ukraine. During the meeting we offer to agree an action plan for the following:

  1. Urgent adoption of the Law of Ukraine about Public service broadcasting.
  2. Immediate amending the Statute of the National Television Company of Ukraine, including the audit and accounting issues of NTCU.
  3. Appointment of directors and election of the supervisory board of the NTCU, National Radio Company of Ukraine and other TRC, the basis for the planned creation of Public service broadcasting.

In should be noted that the creation of Public service broadcasting is also a requirement of the Council of Europe and the Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission).
