In January-February 2015 there was the 3d wave of Journalism exchange program, provided by Media Development Foundation and MYMEDIA.

This project helped 25 young journalists go to the new city and work in local media for 2-8 weeks and receive 500$ scholarship per month. It was the first time when the program hosted not only Ukrainian journalists, but also guests from abroad - 3 media specialists from Belarus came to work in Ukrainian media outlets.

Two interns – Anastasia Gavrishova from Yevpatoria and Pavel Dobrovolsky from Minsk got to the newsroom “Novoye Vremya”. We asked Olena Tribushina, assistant editor of Novoye Vremya website about their impressions of working with the interns.

“Some of them lack practical experience, some need deeper understanding of socio-political context. But it takes time to acquire. But their ability to work with the text and word I estimate really well”

According to Olena, Pavel Dobrovolsky managed to inspire the staff of Novoye Vremya to create a long read story devoted to the anniversary of shootings at Maidan - the project wasn’t planned initially. Olena Tribushina calls the other intern a “journalist of a full cycle” because she can suggest a topic, find experts, write a text and visualize it all on her own.

The biggest weakness of interns to Olena’s mind is a lack of understanding of current situation in the country with socio-political context and key players of media sphere. But in spite of that Olena is impressed by the aptitude of young journalists: “I would say that interns have made noticeable practical contribution to our work. Some of their texts do not yield to the experienced journalists in numbers of views”.

We remind you that we application to Journalism exchange program for May-June is open till April 20th. More details you can find on Facebook webpage.
